So we’ve looked around, and it doesn’t seem that Dairy Queen has an *official* nationwide senior discount. Some websites (e.g. this one), however, claim that some locations offer 10% off for seniors, with the eligibility age not specified. Some locations also offer a free drink and 15% off for coaches.
Deals may vary between Dairy Queen locations, so your best bet would be to call your local Dairy Queen and ask what they got for you.
But even if you don’t find any senior deals at your nearby Dairy Queen, don’t worry – the chain has many other interesting promotions!
Perhaps the most remarkable promotion is a deal called “Served upside down or the next one’s free”. Basically, Dairy Queen has a policy requiring Blizzards to be served upside down – if any customer isn’t served a Blizzard this way, they become eligible for another Blizzard for free.
The upside-down Blizzard has been a thing since 1985 when the dessert debuted. In the 1970s, Ted Drewes Jr., a competitor of Dairy Queen, quite successfully operated a custard stand. He was particularly renowned for his shakes – Drewes would serve them upside-down to convince customers that they weren’t watered down.
Inspired by the lines of eager customers at Drewes’ locations, Dairy Queen decided to come up with the Blizzard and serve it in the same fashion. This practice has been questioned, but it seems to have delivered the intended promotional effect.
Generally, each store owner has been allowed to themselves decide how Blizzards should be served. But in 2016, Dairy Queen enforced the upside-down policy, launching the “Served upside down or the next one’s free” promotion.
The promotion is running even today, though it may be unavailable at some locations.
Dairy Queen has other interesting stuff too. The chain occasionally offers special items, like the Peppermint Hot Cocoa Blizzard in December 2020. Keep an eye on the promotions page for such deals – they come and go quickly.
You may also download the official Dairy Queen mobile app to get access to exclusive discounts, but do keep in mind that these weren’t available at Texas locations as of December 2020.
Aside from exclusive deals, the mobile app also allows you to earn rewards and use them toward your future purchases.
